Why I became a teacher
When asked in kindergarten to draw a picture of myself as an adult... I drew a teacher! I always admired what my teachers were able to do. My best teachers encouraged me to ask questions about what I didn't understand or to question 'why' I was being asked to learn such content. Throughout all of my years as a student I remember the exceptional teachers and the not-so-exceptional ones the best, and I have learned from both. Unknowingly, all of my teachers had an influence on what subject I would eventually teach. I changed my mind several times, but by the end of high school I knew for sure that I wanted to teach English... all because of my 11th grade English teacher, Phyllis Molloff. At the same time I distinctly remember a strong dislike for science. It wasn't until college when I entered Dr. Ted Gish's Biology class at St. Mary's College in Orchard Lake, MI did I change my focus. By the end of my first semester I had declared a new major... BIOLOGY! I was hooked, all because of Dr. Gish's passion for science. I finally had a teacher who showed me just how thrilling the study of science could be! I am forever grateful to him because I truly feel as if I found my niche as a teacher. So, today's lesson... never assume that what you believe about yourself today, will be the same tomorrow! There may be someone you'll meet who can shake your world up when least expected.
I'm happy to say that I LOVE being a teacher and having the opportunity to interact with young people everyday! I am very grateful to be able to have found a profession in which I absolutely adore! Thank you to each of my students for allowing me to spend my life doing this job!
Moving
I was born in Southern California. I remained in SoCal until midway through my senior year of high school. I am truly a California girl at heart. Can't get enough sunshine here in Michigan! A move like that is near devastating to say the least. I know what it is like to be the new kid! I say that I was raised in California, but I 'grew-up' in Michigan. I've lived in Michigan since the end of 1996 with the exception of one year in which I moved to New York City to teach for the 2006-2007 school year. While I loved teaching at the High School for Health Careers and Sciences in the Washington Heights area of Manhattan, I found that living as a New Yorker was just not for me. I am still very fond of the city and recommend it as your next vacation destination if you have not already been there.
I returned to Michigan in the summer of 2007 and then started my teaching career at Anchor Bay High School (Macomb County). I worked there teaching Biology and Chemistry for 8 years and became very involved in Student Activities.
In addition, I spent 3 years at Waterford Mott HS (Oakland County) as a Special Education Teacher and 3 years at Center Line HS (Macomb County) teaching Chemistry and Environmental Science
I'm happy to be living in Michigan and thrilled to be a teacher at Davison High School! :)
Other random things about me
I love to read! I'm mainly a fan of non-fiction and autobiographies but I'll read a novel every now and then too.
I grew up in a Hockey family... in SoCal to say the least! Both my brother and sister made careers of it! My brother Bill has played minor-pro hockey in the United States and Finland. He also lived in the US Virgin Islands where he rAn a business giving Stand-Up Paddle board lessons and renting recreational equipment to tourists! He Now lives in Michigan and runs a Goalie School for Hockey Goalies. My sister Angela played for the U.S. Women's National team! She has been in 4 Winter Olympics and has a Gold, a Bronze, and two Silver medals! She was also a member of the International Olympic Committee, And is a Member of the Class of 2015 Hockey Hall of Fame inductees. Currently, she is the CEO of her company of which they analyze data that pertains to sports technology. My sister has a truly impressive life and I am proud to brag about her. She has also written an autobiography if you have the extra time to check it out.
I love to travel!!! Fortunately, I have family all over the country so it makes for easy vacation destinations. My favorite vacation to date... Hawaii! And no, I don't have any family there : (
I have been working on a Master's in Learning Disabilities at Madonna University in Livonia, MI. (In case the thought crossed your mind... the pop singer has nothing to do with the college.
